Market Town Partnership

VILLAGE PARTNERSHIP PROMOTES BOTLEY

The Botley Market Town Partnership was formed a few years ago in order to promote Botley as a good place in which to live and work, and to visit. It aims to enable residents, community organisations, businesses and Authorities such as the Parish Council to work together in partnership for the benefit of the whole community.

It has achieved a lot!  The village web site has been established; largely through the efforts of Parish Council; a leaflet and noticeboards have been produced to encourage visitors and guide them around the village; research has been carried out with visitors and shoppers to find out why they come to the village; Botley successfully entered into South East England in Bloom; grants were obtained to improve the Square - and much more.

If you run a business, or a group, or are just interested in helping “promote Botley” - then why not join us? Together we can achieve so much more than if we struggle on alone! Could you save a life?

If someone nearby were in crisis, how would you respond?

Anyone can be a lifesaver, given the right skills. A key objective of the British Red Cross is to equip people with life-saving expertise, to enable every community to withstand an emergency or crisis.

The Romsey branch of the charity will be holding a first aid training course on November 27 2008, run by a friendly, experienced trainer.

This one-day basic first aid course will take place at the Romsey Red Cross Centre, 10 Great Well Drive, 9am - 5pm. The programme focuses on key life-saving skills and provides an opportunity to learn how to respond to the most common accidents and situations. All our first aid courses are flexible and easy to follow.

Charlotte Bourne, training co-ordinator, said: "It only takes a few minutes to learn a new skill that could make all the difference if things go wrong. It is simple to pick up the basic knowledge that will help keep those around you safe."

The ‘Basic First Aid' course is suitable for anyone who wishes to learn first aid to cover the more common emergencies. It is a practical course covering life threatening situations and some major illnesses. The course fee is just £40, which purely covers our costs and includes a first aid booklet. A shorter option is available on the same day, from 9am - 2.30pm, teaching ‘Emergency Life Support' skills, at a cost of £20.

Every year the British Red Cross trains thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds in first aid. In Hampshire alone, first aid volunteers treated 393 casualties at public events during 2007.

To find out more about the first aid course or to discuss your requirements, telephone Charlotte on 01483 447872 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  with your name, telephone number and address.

Red Cross Open Gardens
Open your garden gate to the British Red Cross
Open Gardens offers a rare opportunity to explore the secrets of hidden and private gardens not usually accessible to the public.

The British Red Cross is now appealing for new gardens to sign up to the long-running scheme and share your pride and joy with your neighbours and further afield. Enjoy the benefits of your hard work by opening your garden to the appreciative green-fingered public - and raise money for a worthwhile cause at the same time.

We are looking for gardens of all shapes and sizes to open in 2010, from small cottages to whole villages – size doesn't matter. All gardens will be welcomed, whatever their style or status.

The Open Gardens scheme, now UK wide, began in Hampshire – with the earliest known records dating back to 1932.

Judy Medhurst of Oak Tree Drive, Greenfields, Liss, near Petersfield, will open her small colourful garden to the public again this year for the Red Cross. She said: “It’s fun taking part in Open Gardens and doesn’t take much organising – just some extra pleasurable hours in the garden getting things looking nice. Helping the Red Cross gives a great sense of satisfaction – they do so much for people in our local community, as well as across the world.”

In 2009, Open Gardens raised more than £6,500, which helps the British Red Cross care for people in Hampshire with services such as first aid training, health and social care, humanitarian education in schools, emergency response in a disaster, and the fire and emergency support service - helping people cope in the aftermath of a fire by offering practical help, advice and comfort.

Volunteer Barbara Bloxham, Open Gardens co-ordinator, said: “Opening your garden to the public for the Red Cross will give you the satisfaction of other people viewing your garden, and the funds raised for the charity will make a real difference to our local community.

“The variation of the gardens we have signed up is what makes it special – each is delightful in their own large or small way. Even after nigh on 19 years, I am still surprised at the beauty of them all.’

To join the scheme or for further information please contact 01962 891677.

Open Gardens is made possible thanks to hundreds of garden owners who kindly allow the public to visit their gardens, and thousands of volunteers who organise and help out at events. Visit www.redcross.org.uk/opengardens
Safer walking for Botley's children!

A new path with a hard, clean surface has been constructed to link the Botley Centre to Botley School.

Children can now reach the MUGA and Botley Centre by walking around the recreation ground, avoiding the traffic and pollution of High Street.

As it is possible to park cars at Botley Centre, it is hoped that some parents doing the school run will make make use of this facility to reduce congestion in the Mortimer Road car park.

The Village Horse bus : a first for Botley'
The horse bus operates in the summer between the Country Park and Botley Village

Peter Jenks will drive his wagonette around Manor Farm on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, starting at Easter.
The Village Horse Bus will operate on Saturdays in July and August. He will also be visiting the New Forest Show.
Peter is available on 07799 335111, if you need more details, or wish to advertise on the Bus.

Driven by Heavy Horseman Peter Jenks and drawn by Duke and Duchess, two fine Percheron heavyhorses, the bus is a regular sight on Saturdays in the summer. The circular route starts at Manor Farm, passing along Brook Lane, stopping in the Square before continuing to the station and returning along Church Lane. There will be request stops at King's Corner and at the Parish Quay. Proposed start times are 12.30 & 2.30 ( leaving the Square at 1.00 & 3.00), and timetables will be displayed at the stops on Saturdays. The fare for the circular trip is only £5 ( £3.50 for children). Passengers can alight and re-join the bus on a later journey.

The bus offers a new perspective on Botley's countryside for residents and visitors alike. Traders hope that visitors to Manor Farm will be tempted to explore Botley Square.

To advertise on the bus, or to enquire about private hire, call 07799 335111
On Sundays, Peter offers rides around Manor Farm in an open wagonette.
The bus does not operate in very bad weather, so if you are making a special journey,  it would be wise to phone Peter first.

Volunteer drivers needed by Open Sight

The Eastleigh branch of Open Sight aims to help and support visually impaired people in this area.

We run clubs on a weekly basis for our members. These take place at the Wells Centre, Eastleigh. We also have outings, a skittle evening and a Christmas lunch.

For all these activities our members need door-to-door transport. All our drivers are volunteers who can receive a mileage allowance. We have several members in Botley who enjoy these events but no voluntary drivers. We were wondering if you know of anyone who could help in this way.
